Extell, the developer behind some of Manhattan’s most high-profile supertall buildings including Central Park Tower, has filed plans to build what would become the tallest building on the Upper West Side.

Extell wants to build an 86-story, nearly 1,200-foot-tall residential building at 80 W. 67th St. by Columbus Avenue, according to a filing with the city’s Department of Buildings. The property sits on the site of broadcasting company ABC’s former New York campus, between Central Park and Lincoln Center, before the Disney-owned network moved to the Hudson Square neighborhood. The site includes addresses including 77 W. 66th St. and 149 Columbus Ave.

Extell has acquired different properties stretching a full block between 66th and 67th streets along Columbus with plans for several towers anchored by the supertall, according to media reports. Some structures on the site have already been demolished, with additional work actively underway when CoStar News visited the site Friday afternoon.

Plans call for the tower to include 430 residential units, along with retail space and amenities, as well as parking garages, according to the filing.

Extell declined to comment to CoStar News.

Extell is also the developer behind 50 W. 66th St., a 70-story, 775-foot luxury condo tower designed by Snøhetta that’s currently the tallest tower on the Upper West Side. Work on that project is expected to be completed this year, according to Extell’s website.

The newly proposed supertall is expected to be an apartment building. Extell founder Gary Barnett told a local community board last year he would consider setting aside some units for affordable housing, according to neighborhood blog West Side Rag.

The project is said to be one of the most controversial projects on the Upper West Side as residents, preservationists and some elected officials have argued the building’s height is out of scale for a neighborhood known for historic prewar buildings and brownstones. Others, including actor Tony Danza, have raised concerns about the building’s potential to cast shadows over Central Park and surrounding streets.
