Derwent London has been voted fund/developer of the year at the Office Agents Society Development Awards, which on Thursday put to one side concerns about a challenging year to celebrate the best deals and the best completed schemes.
Sir Andrew Strauss, one of England's greatest opening order batsmen and most successful captains, was the guest speaker at the event at the Honorable Artillery Company at Armoury House in London. The event this year raised money in aid of the charity set up in memory of Strauss's wife, the Ruth Strauss Foundation, which supports families when a parent is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.
He had advice for real estate practitioners drawn from England's recent Test match renaissance. "It's not about the winning always," Strauss said. "It's also about the bigger purpose and having fun."
Speaking to CoStar News about the Ashes Test series, which gets under way at Edgbaston today, as well as the event, Strauss added: "I think England will win. Australia have a better balanced team but England have home advantage and they have Bazball." Bazball is a style of cricket introduced by new coach Brendon McCullum, which has been bringing success.
"It was lovely to meet the property world and hand out prizes to well-deserved winners, as well as raising money for the foundation. We have a few big weeks ahead to help families with the loss of parents."
Harriet de Freitas, a director in Avison Young's London office agency team and chair of the OAS Development Awards, said: "It is really important to celebrate the industry's achievements, now more than ever."
The winners which included GPE, BentallGreenOak, Derwent London, JLL, CBRE and Knight Frank were all in attendance to pick up their awards.
