Minneapolis' Economy Is Resilient but Underperforming

Despite Strong Job Growth in 2021, Twin Cities Still Below Pre-Pandemic Employment Levels

The Twin Cities' economy added 98,700 jobs in 2021, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data, representing a 5.3% year-over-year expansion. On a percentage basis, Minneapolis' employment growth last year ranks 17th out of the nation's 54 largest metropolitan areas. Payroll gains were broad-based, with every sector registering increases in 2021 except for financial activities, which were down 6,000 jobs, and information, which was down 100 jobs.
