Mipim, the world's largest real estate conference, gets under way in Cannes this on Tuesday expecting 23,000 delegates, and there has rarely been more at stake for countries talking to the international investment community.

Many will be looking for the conference to bring some clarity to what the industry should be looking out for in the year ahead.

CoStar News plans to be there in force covering the breaking news, presentations and trends as well as interviewing key participants. So what should delegates and readers be preparing for?

Lord Dominic Johnson CBE, minister for investment in the Department for Business and Trade, plans to lead a UK delegation looking to attract foreign direct investment into the nation's major cities and placemaking schemes. He'll be seeking to reassure an international audience given continued wariness around the UK's place in the world after Brexit, the pandemic and controversy over government spending plans.

Johnson is to be joined by representatives from a number of UK cities and regions exhibiting including London, Liverpool, Manchester, Belfast, Cardiff Capital Region, Newcastle, West Midlands Combined Authority, West of England and Central South UK, which includes Portsmouth and Southampton.

West Midlands Combined Authority is made up of 17 local councils and three local enterprise partnerships, including the cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. The Manchester Partnership will promote the 10 Greater Manchester councils, including Manchester City Council, Stockport and Salford City. The London stand will have representatives from the Greater London Authority, City of London and London boroughs.

Johnson is making no bones about the importance of telling the UK story well. He said in a statement: "We are determined to be Europe’s undisputed number one investment destination and, having reached new heights of £2 trillion in inward investment stock, the UK’s investment environment continues to go from strength to strength.

“Encouraging further investment, especially across infrastructure and property, is a priority for the government and is crucial for our levelling up agenda. I greatly look forward to meeting the investors that are building a brighter, better future for the UK.”

Rohan Marwaha, UK managing director at organiser RX, says it will be another important year for UK cities as they seek to attract vital capital inflows to support major housebuilding, infrastructure and regeneration projects.

"We have a huge amount of interest globally in Mipim 2023, and there has arguably never been a more important time to promote the UK as a destination for international investment. Mipim is an unparalleled platform to achieve that."

As CoStar News first reported last month, more than 23,000 people are expectd to attend, a 15% increase on last year, with delegates from more than 90 nations and 2,400 exhibiting businesses. This has been driven by an increase in visitors from UK, France and Germany, as well as an increased global presence, with delegations from the US, Canada, Brazil, Japan and countries from across the Middle East.
