At the end of August, California regulators passed an ambitious plan to phase out the sale of new combustion-engine automobiles across the state by 2035. At that point, the only new cars that dealers will be able to sell in California will be electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell. Initial estimates suggest that this new regulation will cut carbon emissions from cars and trucks in the state as much as 50% by 2040.
