Greystar has named John Wilbeck as head of its business in Canada, tasked with expanding the property giant’s presence across the country. He will be based in Vancouver.
Wilbeck joined Greystar in 2021, the largest apartment owner in the United States with over 108,500 units, to direct the company’s initial move into Canada when it teamed up with Ottawa-based Minto Apartment Real Estate Investment Trust to break into the multifamily market in British Columbia's capital. He will report to Greystar Senior Managing Director of Development David Reid.
Prior to joining Greystar, Wilbeck was a managing director at Hines, where he was responsible for sourcing and leading development projects for the Houston-based developer that included about 1,000 rental units and over 1 million square feet of office development in Western Canada.
“John’s extensive knowledge of the Canadian market is invaluable to our team,” Reid said in a statement. “Elevating John to this role aligns with our long-term vision to enhance our North American presence.”
Based in Charleston, South Carolina, Greystar is currently developing a 593-unit multifamily rental project at University Heights, a shopping centre property in the Victoria suburb of Saanich it acquired in 2022.
The project is slated to include over 110,000 square feet of grocery-anchored retail space on the ground level. Greystar has also submitted zoning applications for predevelopment activities at two other sites in Greater Vancouver.
Wilbeck holds bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and applied mathematics from Columbia University and a master’s of business administration degree from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
“I look forward to growing Greystar’s presence in Canada as a trusted brand for residents and industry partners alike,” Wilbeck said.
