Blink Fitness plans to close nearly a dozen locations, or about 10% of its brick-and-mortar gym fleet, at the end of the month after filing for bankruptcy protection this week.

The New York-based chain, operator of 101 health clubs in seven states, has identified the locations it plans to shutter on Aug. 30 on its website. The closings include gyms in California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Blink, owned by luxury gym operator Equinox Holdings, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, saying it was attempting to sell the company. The chain has positioned itself as an affordable and inclusive gym option for "every body," but said in court documents that it was still financially suffering from the aftereffects of the pandemic.

“As part of Blink's financial restructuring and sale process, we are right-sizing our gym footprint to align with the needs of the markets we serve," a Blink spokeswoman said in an email to CoStar News on Wednesday. "We have made the decision to close approximately 10% of our gyms.

The company added that the gyms that are closing are non-core to Blink’s footprint and predominantly located outside metropolitan New York City. The company said it has already alerted members and staff at the affected gyms.
