Berkadia Recruits New Hotels Head From Eastdil
Berkadia has hired Andy Wimsatt as a senior managing director and head of its hotels and hospitality group. He is based in Berkadia's D.C. Metro office in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and reports to Hilary Provinse, an executive vice president and head of capital markets and production. Wimsatt previously served as a managing director at Eastdil Secured, where he focused on hotel equity and debt placement. During his 30-year career, he has been involved in transactions with an aggregate value of more than $15 billion. Before that, Wimsatt led the hotels institutional properties group at CBRE and for Marriott International for 20 years. "Andy brings decades of expertise and leadership experience in the hospitality sector, which will augment and complement Berkadia’s national platform of institutional, client-driven investment advisors, and mortgage bankers,” Provinse said in a statement. “Over the last three years, the team has strategically grown through the addition of senior hotel talent from other leading capital markets platforms.”
Colliers Grabs Capital Markets Broker in California
Colliers has hired capital markets broker Nadav Kariv from rival Newmark in a move to fortify Colliers' greater Los Angeles brokerage operation. Kariv, who spent the past five years as part of Newmark's Bay Area private capital group, joined Colliers' buyer advisory services practice, an extension of its Southwest investment services team. The buyer advisory practice provides acquisition guidance, creative debt options, and start-to-finish transaction support. In his new role Kariv exclusively represents institutional and private capital investors. "Adding the expertise of Nadav further enhances our team’s capabilities and service offering," Jodie Poirier, a Colliers executive managing director and the brokerage's greater Los Angeles market leader, said in a statement.
During Kariv's 10 years in real estate career, he has sold properties across several sectors with an aggregate value of more than $1.2 billion. Before becoming a broker, he played professional soccer for four years in Israel, Italy and Switzerland. "Nadav’s illustrious track record and work ethic align perfectly with our culture,” Ricardo Pacheco, managing director of the Colliers' Los Angeles markets, said in a statement.
KKR Grows West Coast Business With New Los Angeles Office
After being busy in California for 40 years, KKR and Ralph Rosenberg, its global head of KKR Real Estate, figured the time is right for the firm to have an office in Los Angeles as it works to grow its business in the southern part of the Golden State. So the global investment giant just opened an office in the city to support KKR's real estate, private equity, private wealth and institutional client relationship teams. “Our teams have been spending a lot of time in LA and we have built a strong real estate investment business across the Pacific and Southwestern U.S.," Rosenberg said in a statement. "Having a permanent presence in LA serves as a natural extension of our existing footprint in Northern California and brings more of our team closer to some of our clients."
KKR set up shop at Century Plaza Towers North. "We deliberately selected a location that provides flexibility for further expansion to support the needs of our business," KKR Chief Operating Officer Ryan Stork said in a statement. With the new Los Angeles office, KKR has three locations in California and approximately 250 employees.
Evergreen Adds Affordable Housing Veteran in Chicago
Evergreen Real Estate Group has hired affordable housing veteran Jewell Walton to serve as its vice president of public partnerships. In her new position Walton, who joined Evergreen from the Chicago Housing Authority, will focus on diversifying the firm’s affordable housing portfolio by partnering with public housing agencies to convert existing housing assistance to long-term contracts under the Rental Assistance Demonstration program. RAD is a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development program created to help housing authorities preserve and upgrade public housing properties. Before joining Evergreen, Walton served as deputy chief of RAD programming at the Chicago Housing Authority.
“I have dedicated my career to affordable housing development and look forward to continuing the next chapter” at Evergreen, Walton said in a statement. Walton's "experience will be invaluable in growing the capabilities of our platform as we enter a new segment of the affordable housing market,” Evergreen CEO Steve Rappin said in a statement.
Matthews Recruits Industrial Team in San Diego
Matthews Real Estate Investment Services has hired the San Diego-based industrial team of Chris Nelson, Sam Sukut, Jacob Castro, Jack Simonis and Ben Turner. Nashville, Tennessee-based Matthews recruited the team from brokerage firm Inland Pacific. At Matthews, the team will specialize in the acquisition and disposition of industrial properties in Southern California and provide leasing and capital markets services. Nelson said Matthews' commitment to becoming a major player in San Diego played an important role in the team's decision to join the firm. The focus Matthews "is placing on the regional industrial product type brokerage segment will allow for expeditious market scaling" in the San Diego region, Nelson said in a statement.
Matthews opened its San Diego office in La Jolla last year and now has 21 brokers working in investment sales, leasing and debt and equity services. San Diego market leader Keegan Mulcahy said adding the team from Inland "will accelerate our vision, and we will continue to take market share while seeking the most talented agents in San Diego.”
Cawley Chicago Gets New CEO, Ownership Structure
Cawley Chicago, based in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, has a new management and ownership structure 25 years after Dan Cawley founded the brokerage firm. Cawley stepped down as president and CEO and was succeeded by Zach Pruitt, who helped establish Cawley's downtown Chicago office. Founder Cawley will keep his brokerage license with the firm and continue to serve the clients he's worked with since 1985. Under the succession plan he established, the firm now has several principals, including Pruitt. The others are Anthony Marino, Joshua Hearne, Andrew Maletich, Rawly Lantz, Frank Melchert and David Conroy. "We are executing that succession plan that will allow a talented group of hand-picked professionals to chart the firm’s trajectory for the next 25 years and beyond," Cawley said in a statement.
Cawley now has more than 35 employees, including more than 20 brokers and seven in the firm's property management division. The firm launched its property management division with Marino in 2009 and now manages an 8.3-million-square-foot portfolio that contains more than 90 buildings, with over 365 tenants. "Our 25-year existence is proof that a boutique platform works for a wide variety of businesses; entrepreneurial or institutional owners or users of space," founder Cawley said.
Spectrum Makes Personnel Moves To Grow in Florida
The Spectrum Cos., a development firm, has named Craig Miller senior managing director of multifamily. In his new role, Miller will spearhead Spectrum's multifamily business. He joined the Charlotte, North Carolina-based firm in 2020 as a managing director and has "played a pivotal role in the firm's expansion into the Florida market," where he's overseen the development of nearly 1,800 multifamily units, the company said.
Spectrum also named Lane Stewart to fill the new position of director of development. Stewart, who has 17 years of construction experience, including a decade in multifamily development, will relocate from Charlotte to Tampa, Florida, for the new position. This move signifies Spectrum's commitment to grow its presence in the Florida multifamily market, the company said. "Florida is a key market for The Spectrum Companies," and the personnel moves "reinforce our commitment," CEO Steve McClure said in a statement.
Bull Realty Expands Retail Team
Bull Realty has added veteran brokers Angie Sarris and Aladdin Al Katheri in a move to expand its retail team. Al Katheri, who has more than 25 years of real estate experience focuses on retail investment sales across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic markets. He previously has worked for several real estate firms including Marcus & Millichap and Triple Net Investment Group. In her new role at Bull, Sarris specializes working with clients on retail property acquisitions and dispositions in the Atlanta area and throughout the Southeast. She has 15 years of experience in market research and marketing at Fortune 500 and other large corporations and has worked seven years in real estate.
Sarris said she first got the idea to join Bull and work with founder and CEO Michael Bull several years ago. "I saw Michael speak at an event early on in my career and thought ‘this is a guy that knows what he’s talking about, and I’d like to work with someday,'" she said in a statement. "That someday was six years later, and I’m excited to now be a part of the Bull Realty team."
