One of the largest U.S. homebuilders plans to develop more than 100 townhouses near a hip Atlanta neighborhood in an effort to bring more residences close to city centers.

Stanley Martin Homes said it intends to build the 103 units on a 17-acre site at 1065 Fayetteville Road SE. The site is just east of Interstate 20 and near the East Atlanta district teeming with restaurants, shops and The Earl, a popular music venue.

The Sugar Creek development will feature two- and three-story townhouses with open floor plans and home offices, according to the company.

The builder did not release specific prices but said the development will have multiple options for different types of prospective owners.

"Sugar Creek will provide buyers with contemporary townhomes in an ideal location close to Atlanta's amenities and transportation options, helping us meet the growing demand for urban housing," Mike Walters, Stanley Martin's division president, said in a statement.

Decades after shopping malls fled downtowns for sprawling suburban campuses near major highways, city centers are back in vogue as thriving hubs of activity.

Millennials want to live near where they work and play, and developers in Atlanta and across the country are responding with new homes and apartments, helping to reenergize once-forgotten urban cores.

Stanley Martin said the Fayetteville Road site is being prepared for development and expects to begin sales in 2026.

Stanley Martin, based in Reston, Virginia, is the 22nd-largest U.S. homebuilder based on 4,291 sales last year, according to Builder magazine. The 58-year-old company said it has built more than 20,000 homes in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
