The wildfires on Maui have left some communities with irremediable damage, but a silver lining has been the powerful sense of unity that has emerged from the hospitality industry.
In an email Q&A, Jeff Wagoner, president and CEO of Honolulu-based resort owner/operator Outrigger Hospitality Group, said the collective response from the industry underscores its dedication to supporting the community during times of adversity.
In the aftermath of the Lahaina fires, "the remarkable commitment and compassion displayed by Outrigger towards our collective welfare is truly uplifting. Their unwavering support for one another extends both physically and emotionally, reflecting the strength of our community," he added.
Outrigger has prioritized steps to ensure all of its employees, their families and anyone displaced by the fire find refuge at its Kaanapali Beach Resort.
In the Kaanapali area, Outrigger's Kaanapali Beach Resort and Honua Kai Resort did not sustain any damage, Wagoner said.
All non-essential travel to West Maui remains strongly discouraged through Oct. 17, but travel to other Hawaiian islands is unaffected.
"We are providing shelter, food and additional support services — fostering a sense of unity and care. Additionally, the generosity of our guests has shone through as they contribute to OutriggerCares Maui Fund," Wagoner said.
The fund is a nonprofit initiative to provide financial aid to people in times of need.
Outrigger guests are also being relocated as needed to the company's other hotels across Hawaii.
Within Outrigger's 17 hotel-portfolio, The Plantation Inn in Lahaina suffered irreparable damage. The hotel was the latest addition to its portfolio, which spans across Hawaii, Thailand, Fiji, the Maldives and Mauritius.
"For over three decades, this enchanting 18-room bed and breakfast has welcomed guests as a haven of tranquility and calm," Wagoner said.
The deadly wildfires erupted on Aug. 8. As of Aug. 28, the Olinda fire remains 85% contained, while the Kula fire remains 90% contained and the Lahaina fire is 90% contained, according to the County of Maui government.
"Our reservation team is ready and available to assist with rebooking; guests can call 1-800-688-7444 for assistance. Outrigger will continue to honor the same rate and room type, based on availability, at other Outrigger properties across Oahu, Kauai or Hawaii Island. The date to make any changes or cancellations without penalty has been extended to Sept. 15," Wagoner said.
