KBP Brands has purchased 85 Sonic Drive-In restaurants, expanding its portfolio to more than 1,000 locations in 32 states by adding a new concept to its fold.
Leawood, Kansas-based KBP Brands, one of the largest and fastest-growing franchise operators in the United States, acquired the Sonic restaurants from Boom Inc. for an undisclosed price. The drive-ins are in Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, according to KBP.
With its Sonic purchase, KBP will be adding another Atlanta-based Inspire Brands brand to its restaurant fleet. KBP already operates over 100 Inspire-owned Arby’s across the United States, a partnership started in 2021. The company also has KFC and Taco Bell restaurants.
“Sonic is an iconic brand with a proven track record and differentiated experience, making it a customer favorite and an investment we’re excited about,” KBP CEO Mike Kulp said in a statement. “KBP has grown consistently for more than 20 years by working with great brands and franchisors."
The Sonic addition not only diversifies KBP's portfolio, it also beefs up the company's "geographic density in the southeastern U.S., and expands our relationship and growth with Inspire Brands," according to Kulp.
The 85-unit acquisition is among KBP's largest and is expected to increase annual company revenue to more than $1.5 billion, according to the company. KBP Executive Vice President Mark Everett will lead operations and spearhead growth for the company's new Sonic locations.
Founded in 1953, Sonic has more than 3,500 restaurants in 47 states.
“I had the pleasure of working with KBP during my previous role as president of the Arby’s brand, and I look forward to expanding with them, providing thousands of customizable food and beverage combinations and a unique drive-in format and guest experience that differentiates our brand in the quick-service space,” Sonic Brand President Jim Taylor said in a statement.
