Most cities that host the National Football League's championship game reap hotel performance growth that fuels the entire year, and Los Angeles did not miss out on that bounty this year. The game was played on Feb. 13, 2022, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the home stadium of the NFL's L.A. Rams.
Friday through Sunday of Super Bowl weekend, hotel rates in Los Angeles reached $384 per night, which was more than $200 higher than the same weekend in 2019, before the pandemic impacted hotel performance. The Los Angeles hotel market has one of the largest hotel inventories nationally and a large geographic span, making this total market rate premium even more impressive. Market occupancy for the weekend of the big game was 81%, in line with occupancy levels during the same weekend in 2019.
Every hospitality market across greater Los Angeles experienced rate gains over that weekend. Still, the rates varied significantly throughout Los Angeles, and it wasn’t necessarily due to proximity to SoFi stadium. There are no luxury-class hotels within a five-mile radius of the newly built, $5 billion stadium, but the areas that house the majority of luxury class hotels in the market proved the top hotel rate performers. The Hollywood/Beverly Hills area achieved the highest daily rate at $853, nearly a $500 increase compared to the same weekend in 2019. The Santa Monica and the downtown L.A. areas attained the next highest rates over the event weekend.
Last year, Los Angeles hotels showed solid performance recovery and realized one of the highest annual occupancy and rate levels among the other top markets in the U.S. Hotel recovery slowed in January, a result of the omicron variant, but based on Super Bowl weekend results, February is projected to be a strong hotel performance month locally.
