The slowdown of U.S. consumer spending has hit The Container Store's bottom line as shoppers cut back on buying discretionary items, such as home goods and furniture, helping lead to a 15% drop of consolidated net sales for the fourth quarter, forcing the retailer to lay off a portion of its workforce.
