German hotel firm Motel One Group reported it has suffered a minor data breach.
Motel One Group has 93 hotels in 12 countries in operation and its pipeline, including 62 in its home base of Germany. In a statement, the company said “currently unknown perpetrators infiltrated the hotel operator’s internal systems and most likely tried to carry out a so-called ransomware attack.”
The company added that damage was kept to a minimum, “the business operation … was never at risk” and “quick immediate measures included commissioning a certified IT security service provider and working with investigative and data protection authorities.”
Motel One said that its analysis of the attack revealed that “address data from costumers was accessed, including 150 credit-card details.”
Those customers have been alerted personally, the statement said.
Online IT-security forum Security Affairs placed the blame on ransomware group AlphV/Black Cat and published a Sept. 30 note to Motel One it said came from the hackers. That statement said the hacking group accessed three years of booking confirmation details, including "names, addresses, dates of reservation, payment method and contact information."
No financial or other demands were made by the alleged infiltrators.
Hotel companies are no strangers to being targets of data thieves.
In September, U.S. hotel firms Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International reported data breaches, where hackers stole six terabytes worth of data.
