A Doncaster end-terrace property best recognised as the corner shop from the popular BBC sitcom 'Open All Hours' starring Ronnie Barker and David Jason is being put up for sale.
15 Lister Avenue, a 25-minute walk from the city centre, was used as the exterior of Albert Arkwright's store for the long-running series, which started filming in 1973 and closed in 1985. Ronnie Barker, also known for his roles in 'Porridge' and 'The Two Ronnies', played the store's owner, supported by his on-screen nephew David Jason, who played Granville.
Agents say the property is largely unchanged from its screen days and was saved from demolition in 2008 by campaigners. It currently stands as a vacant hairdressing salon on the ground floor, with two tenanted, self-contained apartments above.
Sheffield auction house Mark Jenkinson, which is part of the Eddisons property group, is selling the well-known building on behalf of joint agent Kembles Estates, with a guide price in excess of £150,000. The auction is scheduled for 16 October.
James Vandenbrook, Mark Jenkinson associate director, said in a statement: "The shop is instantly recognisable from the outside as the backdrop to the drama that played out between Ronnie Barker’s spendthrift grocer Arkwright and his long-suffering errand boy Granville.
"It really is part of television history and of course that has created lots of interest in the sale from potential bidders. It will be interesting to see what happens when the auction closes - and what the next episode will hold for this totally unique end-of-terrace Doncaster property."
The property also featured in the reboot of the series, 'Still Open All Hours, which ran from 2013 to 2019, again featuring David Jason. The actor is also famed for playing the role of Derek Trotter, or 'Del Boy', in another famous BBC sitcom, 'Only Fools and Horses'.
The BBC used exterior shots of Ealing's Harlech Tower, a residential block, for that series. It is set to be replaced with £850 million flats in 2027 under plans approved by the local council in May.
