The Leadenhall Building: a tall story

On the day The Leadenhall Building officially opens its doors for business via a royal visit from Princes William and Harry, the City tower already lays claim to a number of records. It is – for now at least – the tallest building in the Square Mile; it recently achieved the highest rents of all time in the City; and has Europe’s fastest panoramic elevators, travelling at eight metres per second. So, what next for the building colloquially known as The Cheesegrater?

Standing on the 43rd floor of the Leadenhall Building one of the few still available to let - with British Land’s Tim Roberts and Chris Carter Keall of Oxford Properties, the 50:50 joint venture which has turned architect Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’ scribbles into a reality and one of London’s landmark buildings, it seems a very long time since the difficult decision was taken to mothball the site during the teeth of the global financial crisis in 2008.
