Multifamily firm owner Patrick Carroll, who struck an agreement over the summer to sell 28,000 apartments to RMR Group, is touring the country to give sneakers to underprivileged children as part of his commitment to donate $1 million worth of shoes.

Carroll, founder of the Carroll Organization, took his "Kicks for Kids" tour to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington during the past week. At the event, Carroll was joined by entrepreneur and shoe reseller Ben Kickz, aka "The Sneaker Don," and a group of friends to give away truckloads of sneakers to children at the Boys Club. Washington, D.C., was the sixth city Carroll visited as he worked to donate sneakers to kids in need across the U.S.

Seeing the lit-up faces of the children who receive the shoes is a genuine and fulfilling experience, Carroll said. "As cliche as it sounds, the message I give the kids is, 'If I can do it, anyone can do it.' I am far from your typical success story," he said in a statement. "I got in some trouble growing up, didn’t go to college, and I'm self-taught."

Carroll founded his firm in 2004. The company has acquired more than $12 billion of real estate and sold investments valued at more than $8.8 billion. Carroll has also developed and managed the construction of more than $500 million of real estate on behalf of institutional partners, private investors and its principals.

This fall, the Carroll Organization is expected to complete its large portfolio sale to RMR, reportedly for $80 million.
