Statistics Canada estimates that Canada’s population grew by nearly 1 million people between July 2023 and June 2024. Ontario received the largest share, 416,000 persons, followed by British Columbia and Quebec, at around 170,000 persons each. Government officials see the large wave of migration as exacerbating the country’s housing affordability crisis. As such, the government has put a temporary cap on one of the largest immigration groups, foreign students. This cap, coupled with other factors, is forecast to cause the country’s population growth to decline by around 70%.
