Hotel News Now has received several awards for event coverage, headline writing and reporting as recognized by its peers in trade journalism.
The Hotel News Now editorial team was honored by the American Society of Business Publication Editors, a professional association for full-time and freelance editors, writers, art directors and designers employed in the business, trade and specialty press industry.
At the national award level, Hotel News Now received two 2023 National Gold Awards, one for Overall Headline Writing and another for Trade Show/Conference Coverage, specifically for its coverage of the 2022 Hotel Data Conference.
This was the first year Hotel News Now entered the Overall Headline Category. Senior Managing Editor Robert McCune said engaging and impactful headline writing is a daily priority for the editorial staff.
“The Hotel News Now team’s strength in headline writing really comes from a collaborative approach. As a team, HNN’s editors and reporters dissect the story to get at what makes it interesting and unique, and then efficiently boil that down to just a few words to draw the reader in,” McCune said. “The headlines entered into this contest were for stories ranging from a blog on the fate of the hotel minibar to breaking news of Western hotel companies’ reaction to the worsening conflict in Ukraine, and the various, colorful routines that hoteliers go through in opening a new property.”

Senior Reporter Bryan Wroten said the Hotel News Now team puts a lot of work into covering the Hotel Data Conference each year.
“We absolutely do our best in covering any industry conference that we attend, but the Hotel Data Conference is special to us because it's partially our conference [along with STR],” Wroten said. “We spend a lot of time planning out our panel coverage, our moderation and our video interviews with executives, so it's gratifying to receive recognition for our hard work. It's a true team effort to put everything together, so this is a win we can all savor.”
In addition to the national awards, Hotel News Now also received 2023 Regional Gold Awards for Overall Headline Writing and Trade Show Conference Coverage.
Senior Reporter Dana Miller received a 2023 Regional Silver Award in the All Content division, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion category for Pushing Through the Stigmas: Women in Hospitality Navigate the Corporate Ladder. Miller interviewed four women in the hospitality industry and asked them how the industry could do better to improve gender diversity leadership among hotel companies.
“I’m beyond thankful these hoteliers shared their stories of how they’re navigating the corporate ladder in an industry that’s historically dominated by men,” Miller said. “Helping to create dialogue around it helps push change and bring awareness within the industry. The feedback I received included additional women wanting to share their stories with me, which then resulted in this becoming a three-part series.”
Wroten, Miller and Associate Editor Trevor Simpson won a 2023 Regional Bronze Award in the Online division, Online Breaking News Coverage category for their combined coverage of Hurricane Ian's hotel impact. Before, during and after Hurricane Ian made landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast in the fall of 2022, Hotel News Now's reporting team interviewed hoteliers with properties in or near the path of the storm. CoStar News Reporter Richard Lawson also contributed to the coverage that led to this regional ASBPE award.
Simpson said the depth of the Hurricane Ian coverage wouldn't be possible without plenty of collaboration by the Hotel News Now reporting team.
“I was actually working on a story about how hotels prepare for the hurricane season when Ian hit, which ended up really elevating our coverage,” Simpson said. “We were able to provide readers with reactions from impacted hoteliers along with the context of how these hoteliers handle and deal with these storms from an operational side. I was honored to work with my colleagues, Dana Miller and Bryan Wroten, on a story of this scale and am proud of what we achieved.”
Hotel News Now's Terence Baker, News Editor, EMEA, led the way in reporting on the hotel industry's presence in Russia as Russian forces invaded Ukraine beginning in February 2022. The coverage earned a 2023 Regional Bronze Award in the Online Division's Online Single Topic Coverage by a Team category.
