The first civil supersonic jet made in the United States took off Tuesday over California's Mojave Desert, a historic flight that marks a major step toward jet designer and developer Boom Supersonic's goal to build the world's fastest passenger airliner, the Overture, at a new plant in Greensboro, North Carolina.
