Marriott International is the latest victim of a cyberattack at one of its properties.

According to a news report by databreaches.net on Tuesday, the attack occurred about a month ago and was led by a "an international group working for about five years."

The news site reports the group allegedly stole information through an associate at the BWI Airport Marriott in Baltimore.

Marriott International confirmed with Hotel News Now that it's aware of a threat actor who used social engineering to trick an associate, but noted the attacker failed to access the hotel brand's "core network."

"Our investigation determined that the information accessed primarily contained non-sensitive internal business files regarding the operation of the property," a Marriott spokesperson said in a statement. "The incident was contained to a short period of time."

The spokesperson confirmed Marriott was able to identify and investigate the attack before the threat actor "contacted the company in an extortion attempt, which Marriott did not pay."

Marriott said it was notifying between 300 and 400 individuals about the incident, as well as law enforcement for support in the investigation.

News outlet CyberScoop reports Marriott last suffered data breaches in 2020 and 2018.

Senior reporter Bryan Wroten contributed to this story.
