Arthur Andersen LLP is preparing to vacate 308,567 square feet of office space at 711 Louisiana St. as a result of its Federal Court conviction. In mid-June, a federal jury found the accounting firm guilty of obstruction of justice for destroying Enron documents to disrupt an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Arthur Andersen, its outside auditor, protected Enron, whose executives defrauded shareholders and lied to Wall Street, when Andersen shredded thousands of Enron-related documents. Even before the verdict, the corporate auditor decided to close many of its offices nationwide, including all of its offices in Texas. The decision to shut down is another slap in the face to the unemployment situation in Houston, as tens of thousands of residents already lost jobs last fall when Houston-based Enron filed for bankruptcy.
