In the face of the biggest squeeze on living standards and disposable income for decades, in 2022 the European retail sector managed to hold up admirably and perform well against comparative asset classes. The sector has continued to stand firm during the start of 2023, with consistent sales and footfall, but conditions for both consumers and retailers remain turbulent and uncertain. There is a clear disconnect between operational performance and share prices. However, there is a degree of optimism among investors – and for a good reason.
