Just months after the 327-unit Foundry apartment tower on Chicago’s North Side opened, one photo captured the area’s industrial past and luxury high-rise present.
CoStar architectural photographer Brett Bulthuis recently shot the 27-story tower at the center. A large smokestack and the historic Carbit Paint water tank to the left provide a glimpse of the industrial roots in the area across the Chicago River from gritty Goose Island, while modern residential buildings, including two SoNo towers, are seen to the right.
The juxtaposition — captured using a drone and a polarizer to limit reflections off the tower — is indicative of an eclectic mix of uses near the new tower at 1475 N. Kingsbury St. The street includes a massive Whole Foods store; Mousetrap, a taproom for Off Color Brewing; a longtime strip club called VIP’s Gentleman’s Club; and an REI flagship store with a ramp connecting rented kayaks and canoes to the river.
Several other tall residential towers are proposed within a few blocks, probably bringing more changes to the area along the wealthy Lincoln Park and Old Town neighborhoods.
