Vacancies in the San Francisco apartment market spiked in 2020 as renters moved out en masse amid the pandemic. Untethered from their offices through next summer at the earliest, renters fled expensive apartments in the locked-down city. Some are moving to outdoor-friendly towns or nearby suburban areas like Sacramento to ride out the pandemic, while others are taking the opportunity to relocate permanently to other emerging tech hubs throughout the country.
