Strong dollar influences Americans' travel decisions to go abroad

International tourist counts from Asia, Europe, and South America still lag 2019 results

The U.S. dollar has strengthened over the past four years, and Americans have used their purchasing power to vacation abroad, particularly in Europe and Asia. In December 2020, $1 bought 0.82 euros. In June 2023, the exchange rate rose to 0.93 euros and stayed above 0.90 euros for most of 2024. This was part of the reason that U.S. visitation counts to Europe hit 2019 results in early 2023 and kept climbing higher in 2024.
