Boston may become the second U.S. city with a stadium built exclusively for a professional women’s soccer team.

Stantec released architectural drawings of its proposal to renovate historic White Stadium in Franklin Park into an 11,000-seat soccer stadium. The $30 million renovation of the 73-year-old venue is set to include upgraded seating, canopies over the grandstands, food and drink amenities and event space. Boston Public Schools, which owns the stadium, would also use the upgraded facility after construction is completed.

The National Women’s Soccer League awarded Boston an expansion franchise that’s set to begin play in 2026. Boston would join Kansas City, Missouri, as the second NWSL franchise to develop a stadium specifically for a women’s team.

The unnamed Boston team is expected to become the 15th franchise of the NWSL after the San Francisco Bay Area and Salt Lake City were awarded new franchises by the NWSL to start play next year. Bay FC will play temporarily at PayPal Park in San Jose, California, until the team develops its own stadium. Utah Royals FC will play at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.

Stantec, an engineering and architecture firm based in Edmonton, Alberta, recently completed La Clara West Palm Beach, a 25-story condominium tower in Florida. Stantec also designed Hotel Zachary, a boutique hotel located next to the Chicago Cubs’ Wrigley Field baseball stadium in Chicago.

For the Record

Boston-based Able Co. is part of the development team for the renovation of White Stadium. Howard Stein Hudson and VHB provided engineering and planning services. Chris Tsouros at ArentFox Schiff is legal counsel to the developers.
