A once-abandoned jail in Charleston, South Carolina, has gained newfound energy after a $15 million renovation and repurposing. The location is buzzing.

The Old Charleston Jail at 21 Magazine St. underwent a seven-year renovation starting with the help of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina-based Landmark Enterprises.

Framed by two towers, and originally built in 1802, the former jail rises four floors. It was closed in 1939. Today, its been given new life with modern office and indoor and outdoor event spaces, all while preserving parts of the original building.

Adaptive reuse projects gut and breathe new life into historic structures. The Old Charleston Jail has been selected by a panel of local industry professionals as the winner of the CoStar Impact Award for redevelopment of the year for the Charleston market.

About the project: The property, located in the heart of downtown, was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

What the judges said: "The Old Charleston Jail is the Redevelopment of the Year because it introduces adaptive mixed-use to a previously overlooked part of the peninsula,” said Kacky Teston, a marketing specialist for the Charleston-based commercial real estate brokerage firm Bridge Commercial. “After years of planning and effort, the finished project is a stunning transformation that will revitalize the area with new life and activity."

They made it happen: Landmark Enterprises Commercial Real Estate owns and manages the Old Charleston Jail.
