Twin Cities Labor Market Remains Bifurcated

Middle-Income Sectors Lead Annual Job Growth, Office-Using Job Losses Remain Among Most Substantial

According to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonfarm employers in the Twin Cities added 22,700 jobs in May. That represents the strongest month of non-seasonally adjusted employment gains over the past year, driving annual job growth to 12,400. It also pushes total nonfarm payrolls to 23,600 jobs above February 2020 levels. For context, the metropolitan area's Midwest counterpart, Milwaukee, remains 6,800 jobs below pre-pandemic levels.
