A Chicago-based accounting firm that offers assurance, tax and advisory services for clients across the country has made a deal to open a new location at a medical office park in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

BDO USA signed a lease in October 2024 for 35,265 square feet of office space in the Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building, a 205,000-square-foot, seven-story structure owned by Michigan State University. The company, which has more than 70 offices and 12,000 employees, agreed to occupy space on the fifth and sixth floors at the property located at 109 Michigan St. NW.

BDO USA has been selected by a panel of local industry professionals as the winner of the 2025 CoStar Impact Awards for lease of the year for West Michigan.

BDO's new office is located in the Grand Rapids Innovation Park, a medical campus that focuses on biomedical research, bioengineering and health technology. The Doug Meijer building is located within Grand Rapids' "Medical Mile" along the Grand River. Other healthcare properties in the area include the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital and the Cancer & Hematology Centers of West Michigan.

About the project: Rockford Construction was the developer of the Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building, which opened in 2022. Doug Meijer, whose family operates the Midwest grocery chain Meijer, and the Meijer Foundation donated $19.5 million toward the construction of the building.

What the judges said: Stu Kingma, executive vice president at NAI Wisinski of West Michigan, said the lease deal is "bringing more people back downtown after the Covid stay-at-home process impacted downtown occupancy levels."

They made it happen: Jeff Karger, executive vice president, and Sarah Noordyke, an associate at JLL represented the landlord in the deal. Mary Anne Wisinski-Rosely, partner, and Jason Makowski, partner, at NAI Wisinski of West Michigan, and Jeff Lindenmeyer, principal, and Mark Robbins, principal, at Avison Young, represented the tenant.
