Amazon MGM Studios agreed to a lease for studio space in Toronto that would mark its first multiyear commitment in Canada and only the second such deal outside the United States.
The studio, which films productions in Canada such as The Boys and Gen V, said it signed a contract with Pinewood Toronto Studios to use new production facilities at its downtown Toronto studios. Details were not announced.
Located at 225 Commissioners St., the film and television studio complex occupies a 20-acre site just west of the downtown core and has 11 stages. Named after the famed Pinewood Studios in the U.K., the complex is the largest of its kind in Canada. The Amazon deal includes exclusive use of five new state-of-the-art sound stages, accompanying workshops and office accommodation, totalling 160,000 square feet.
"Pinewood Group is an industry leader and with the Toronto region's best-in-class crews, this agreement offers us immense opportunity for the continued expansion of film and series projects in Toronto, Ontario, and Canada," said Dan Scharf, vice president of global business operations with Amazon MGM Studios, in a statement.
Paul Golding, chairman of Pinewood Group, called the deal a "landmark agreement" and said in his statement it would strengthen the company's relationship with Amazon MGM Studios and its commitment to Toronto.
The city of Toronto says the screen industry made investments of $2.5 billion in direct spending in film, television, and digital media productions in 2021, a record level. The city said there were 1,468 productions active in 2021.
