The NFL's Washington Commanders signed a lease to move its headquarters out of FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, to a new office at the University of Maryland's Discovery District in College Park.

The move will clear space to meet greater demand for suites at the stadium, according to a team press release.

The Commanders subleased 27,516 square feet across the top floor of the four-story building at 4600 River Road. It is subleasing the space from Cybrary, a free, crowdsourced online information technology and cybersecurity training and career development platform that signed a lease in 2020 with building owner COPT Defense Properties to anchor the building.

The team is expected to move into its new location in early 2024.

The Discovery District is a 150-acre research and innovation hub on the east side of Maryland's flagship campus that is home to more than 60 tenants, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Capital One, Adobe and Raytheon. It was developed as part of the $2 billion Greater College Park initiative to revitalize the Baltimore Avenue corridor.

"The proximity to this new home for the Commanders is an incredible opportunity for our students pursuing invaluable internships and our emerging sports management program. We look forward to all the possibilities for partnership," Ken Ulman, chief strategy officer for economic development at the University of Maryland, said in a statement.

The move comes as the team is considering a relocation of its own after its lease at FedEx Field ends in 2027. The team has played there since 1997 but has been looking at other locations in the state, as well as Washington, D.C., and Virginia, with hopes of relocating to a new stadium.

For the Record

Matthew Leon and Gary Cuadros of Newmark represented the Commanders in the lease negotiations. Jonathan Hall, Niel Beggy, and Jack Evans of CBRE represented Cybrary.
