Tampa, FL-based Shells Seafood Restaurants, a seafood casual dining chain, filed Chapter 11 on Sept. 2 and immediately closed eight restaurants in Ocala, Winter Park, Orlando, Kissimmee, Winter Haven, St. Petersburg, Holmes Beach and Ft. Myers. At the time, the company said it would keep its remaining 10 company-owned Shells restaurants open in the hopes that it would obtain additional financing to keep the company going. On Sept. 24, Shells requested the Court convert its Chapter 11 bankruptcy into Chapter 7; which would result in the company's complete liquidation. The company said it was unsuccessful in obtaining additional capital due to "restrictive credit markets." Shells managed and operated, but only partially owned, four restaurants that were not included in the filing and remain open.
