CoStar News won awards in the largest real estate journalism contest in the United States for its coverage of international news and interior design.
The National Association of Real Estate Editors announced the recipients of its 74th Annual Journalism Awards Thursday night at the organization's conference in Austin, Texas. An outside panel of judges selected winners from work published in 2023 in a competition that included prominent national news organizations such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News and the Washington Post.
CoStar staff writer Andy Peters was awarded a silver medal for interior design news with "How Office Furniture Recyclers Divert a Growing Pile From Landfills," published July 31, 2023. Interior projects often face a rarely discussed challenge: how best to deal with the furniture and other workplace components getting replaced, an issue that's expected to grow more pressing as renovations increase. Peters compares office move-outs to move-ins and other statistics to illustrate why companies are turning to workplace design as one way to lure employees back to the office in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The judges said: "Andy Peters uses data (17 billion pounds of “office assets” go to landfills each year), examples (Twitter auctioned “surplus corporate office assets,” including designer furniture) and the reasons behind all the unwanted chairs (corporate America is upgrading office chairs to improve employee morale — hence, head and back support in the new chairs at Chase’s headquarters). The specific, not generic, details make the piece."
CoStar journalists Paul Norman and Julia Lee received an honorable mention for “Coronation Special: How and When King Charles’s Real Estate Was Assembled,” published May 5, 2023. The story explained that the coronation of King Charles marked more than mere ceremony, it was a transfer of one of the world’s oldest and most high-profile real estate portfolios with holdings that underpin the United Kingdom monarchy dating back to 1066. Norman and Lee, based in London, explain to readers around the world how the property made the monarch essentially the United Kingdom's first real estate valuer.
