A college football stadium in Central Texas is gearing up for $37 million in renovations and additions.
Officials with Texas State University held a ceremonial groundbreaking on a new performance center at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, Texas, which is about 30 miles southwest of Austin, Texas. However, actual construction on the project is expected to begin in the summer.
Plans for the privately funded project include adding an 8,000-square-foot weight room, players lounge, training room with hydrotherapy, upgraded conference rooms and offices, a recruiting room and new premium hospitality spaces.
The performance center is expected to be named in honor of the Weisman family, pending approval from the Texas State University Board of Regents, according to a statement. Johnny Weisman and Nathali Weisman donated $4 million earlier this year to Texas State Athletics for the project.
Johnny Weisman is one of Texas State's Distinguished Alumni and has successfully owned and operated three businesses that support the construction and expansion of roadways in the state and federal highway systems for more than 40 years, according to Texas State's website.
Bobcat Stadium, a 30,000-seat venue that was built in 1981 and expanded in 2012, is the home stadium for Texas State's Division I college football program. Bobcat Stadium, located at 1100 Aquarena Springs, has also served as the home of the Texas Special Olympics and was used as a set for the film, "The Ringer," and television show "Friday Night Lights," according to a Texas State spokesperson.
Other announced donors for the stadium's renovations and additions include Bo and Darlene Trevillion, as well as Scott and Yvonne Emerson. The weight room will be named in honor of William Trevillion IV, who played for the Texas State football team between 2013 and 2016. Trevillion IV passed away in January 2016.
Texas State’s football program was founded in 1904 and currently competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
