Retail leasing in the Motor City softens early in 2025

Macomb County accounted for the largest lease volume among area submarkets

Detroit's retail leasing volume of 3.49 million square feet in 2024 was down 18.1% from the prior year. This recent reduction reversed a trend of leasing volume ticking upward since 2020, reaching a high point of 4.2 million square feet in 2022. However, this downward compression is only slightly below the five-year average of 3.7 million square feet per year over the past five years.
