More than 50 years ago, the family-owned Alter Group invested in 641 acres in a far northwest Chicago suburb, betting on outward suburban growth from the city increasing its value. A half-century later, instead of the residential community the company expected, the U.S. industrial real estate boom is turning the land into one of America's largest master-planned projects.
