Denver-based shale oil producer Whiting Petroleum filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Wednesday, with plans to continue operating while it restructures finances. Whiting is likely to prove the first domino to fall during the rapid dual shock to demand and supply in oil markets, which has many U.S. shale producers teetering.
