DC's population gains come from northern states, those living abroad

Virginia and Maryland continue to see in-migration from Washington

While Washington, D.C., has yet to regain all the population lost due to the pandemic, the city did grow between 2022 and 2023 primarily due to natural births and people moving from abroad. However, migration from U.S. states was negative by about 7,500 people, meaning more people moved out of the District to individual states than moved in.
