City’s Grocers Experience Inflation-Adjusted Sales Growth After Two Years of Struggle

Montreal’s food and beverage retailers were hit hard by the rapid increase in food prices that occurred starting in mid-2021. As food prices increased, Montrealers reigned in their spending, leading to a contraction in sales growth starting in late 2021 that ran through 2022. As food inflation started to moderate, the city’s grocery stores and other food retailers began to see a recovery in retail sales, which continues as of mid-2024.
