Attracting medtech manufacturer Getinge to a redeveloped brownfield site in Derby was deemed a major coup for logistics developer St Modwen, as judges of the CoStar Impact Awards crowned its scheme Development of the Year for East Midlands.

Following a £46.5 million investment, Blackstone-owned developer-investor St Modwen set its sights developed 67 acres of brownfield land into four warehouses totaling more than 300,000 square foot.

The Swedish medical technology manufacturer, announced in February, was the first medtech tenant at the scheme. It took the 78,000-square-foot unit at St Modwen Park Derby, where it has warehouse, office and research development accommodation.

Derby City Council and Marketing Derby both supported the scheme, which sits off the A52, in helping to bring Getinge on board. Its new UK headquarters opened last month.

About the Project: At the facility the company will bring together its chemistry and instrument decontamination business, as well as its UK sales offices, service functions and logistics operations.

The site will also feature Getinge’s new Global Centre of Excellence for Chemistry, a department focused on chemistry and instrument disinfection, which is aiming to create new products and solutions for the healthcare industry.

Its on-site training facility also means it will be able to top up its specialist workforce with talent available in the region. Getinge’s new headquarters has been rated as Excellent by BREEAM and is EPC A rated.

What the Judges Said: Keith Lown, head of department for property management and development at Nottingham Trent University, said: "This is an impressive scheme that has proven to be a fantastic success so far, with more to go. The specification of the buildings is to the highest environmental standards and the scheme has already attracted a key tenant in scientific laboratory supplies. This is very encouraging news for Nottingham and the wider East Midlands."

They Made It Happen: Robert Richardson, development director at St Modwen, and Nick Hosking, director at Innes England.
