The Sun Life Building is a famous landmark in downtown Montreal. During World War II, the office building's huge underground vault played a prominent role in Operation Fish, an effort by the British to move gold and other securities to Canada ahead of a possible Nazi invasion.
I used the Mavic 3 camera drone for the aerial image above. I was precise with the time of day — 7:30 p.m. in mid-August — as I wanted to avoid a high-contrast situation. It was important for me to show the relationship between the building and the rest of the Montreal skyline. In front of the building sits Dorchester square, a green haven in downtown Montreal.
The ground shot was made using a lens that can be shifted or tilted and a tripod. Never underestimate a good ground shot, it is closer to the way we experience architecture and gives us the perspective that we feel when when walk towards the building. This method lets me shoot for longer when ambient lighting is insufficient for high-quality drone work.
